Life On Mars

Image
Life on mars is a British TV series set in Manchester. We follow a present day officer as he is transported back to 1973, and has to carry out his duty a DCI but with the adverse conditions and differences of 1973. We start off in modern day, 2006, Manchester where we see Sam hunt down and arrest a suspect in a murder case. He does this clinically and effectively. He then takes the suspect down to the station and we see an interrogation scene. The scene is quick and snappy. The lighting is also cold and harsh yet bright. In comparison when we see the methods of the police officers back in the 70's as harsh and unorthodox. We see Gene interview a woman in a broom closet. He abuses her and also use violence to get answers. This varies massively to the modern methods and highlight the differences between the two eras. When sam walks into the office back in the 70's we can see his almost shocked expressions from the environment. They are all white men who are smoking and dri...

Luther- Opening 15 Mins Analysis and comparison with The Fall

Image
The first opening shot of the pre credit sequence is an establishing shot of the location in which the following scene will take place. We see a dark almost abandoned warehouse. The fact that this is dark and gloomy tells the audience that this part of the show is going to be gritty and realistic. This also sets the tone for the rest of the pre credit sequence. In The fall the opening shots are a handheld shot following a woman in her apartment alone. The fact that the shot is handheld makes it almost feel like we are spying on her and hiding from her sight. Luther starts off the series in media res and right in the centre of the action. This sets the tone for the show as being fast paced and quick. This also tells us that the detective, luther, will be following this fast paced convention. Differently The fall starts off very slow and at the beginning of our story. This sets the tone of intricacy and details. After this shot there is a quick cut of shots of a man. This builds ten...

Advert (not finished)

Image
How are audiences positioned by the use of media language and representation in the ads The first of the two adverts is a savethechildren charity ad that focuses on the idea of war. The money they are raising would go to the syrian war help and the main idea they are targeting here is that most people who don't donate say that it doesn't effect them and the theme is that what if it was locally so the ad focuses on what if there was a war in the uk. The ad's usp is the fact that its only framed by looking at this child. This makes the audience feel what she feels as she's the only one we follow. This appeals to the sense of sympathy and encourages them to donate.  The use of colour in the ad tells the audience that it is slowly decaying into anarchy as it starts of very colourful and light and then slowly transitions into being very dark and bland. The clothes which were once very bright have been drowned out and positions the audience in a sympathetic and...

Radio unfinished

Image
There are two types of radio , being commercial and public service. Commercial radio is funded by ads and an independent organisation where as public service such as the BBC is publicly funded and therefore has to provide certain services in order to keep with the set precedent. BBC radio 1 BBC radio 1 is aimed predominantly at a  young early 20s audience as they usually play pop and occasional indie and hip hop. They do this by having a young host , Nick Grimshaw, who attracts the attention of a younger audience. They also have a live lounge where they play music from artists live on air. Usually this promotes the artist and appeals to their audience as they usually have new and upcoming artists there. BBC 1 Xtra BBC 1 Xtra is aimed at young audience mainly under 25 and is trying to attract an urban audience. It mainly plays grime and hip hop but also does some talking sections on grime and advice. These are usually comedic and appeal to this younger audience. ...

Straight Outta Compton Trailer

Image
This is the advert for straight outta Compton, straight outta compton is based on a group of young men that want to introduce rap to the work however the authorities do not want this and try to arrest them. There are a number of target audiences. The biggest would probably be teens as it is relatable to a younger audience who wouldn't have witnessed these stories but would've grown up hearing about them. It also appeals to an older audience as it plays on that 80's nostalgia. It would also relate to slightly older people because they would've remembered the N.W.A and again plays on that nostalgia. There is a huge variety of shot types in the ad ranging from wides to close ups and many cinematic techniques are used. This creates the idea of cinematic value and makes the audience think this film is very professional which in turn would persuade them to see it.  Voice overs are also used to give an overview of the narrative. This helps the audience understand mor...

Assassins Creed III: Liberation

Image
Assassins Creed III : Liberation is a 2012 action adventure game which was initially released on the PS Vita. The plot is set in a fictional history of New Orleans but follows fake characters influenced on real history. Throughout the game a player controls a female protagonist named Avaline on her journey to free slaves in her hometown and get revenge for her mother's death. The characters is able to switch between the main character's different personas as a lady, a slave and an assassin. The game was initially a PS Vita only release and was designed to promote the handheld console. The game did alright but the PS Vita didn't really catch on so the game suffered. It was then rereleased for PS3 but with updated graphics and a different ad campaign. In the PS Vita ad it shows all gameplay on the console itself as it was trying to promote the new console.  This was also the first assassins creed game to have a female protagonist. She is presented as a stro...

Negative English Stereotypes

Image
The stereotype I decided to write about is the negative English stereotype. There are a few key stereotypes people think English people fall into. The image I have selected shows many different English stereotypes including : bad teeth, drunks, bad whether and patriotic. The first negative English stereotype which is shown in this picture is that English people have bad teeth. Despite whether or not this stereotype is true this picture shows a man with very few teeth. This stereotype is constantly referenced in tv and one good example I found was a clip from the Simpsons where a kid is being scared by a 'book of English smiles'. This is clearly a negative stereotype as its insulting to English people. Another English stereotype which is shown clearly in this image is the stereotype that all English people are drunks. This stereotype is particularly insulting and is definitely a negative stereotype. The other insulting stereotype in this image is the bad whether stereotype...
