Luther- Opening 15 Mins Analysis and comparison with The Fall

The first opening shot of the pre credit sequence is an establishing shot of the location in which the following scene will take place. We see a dark almost abandoned warehouse. The fact that this is dark and gloomy tells the audience that this part of the show is going to be gritty and realistic. This also sets the tone for the rest of the pre credit sequence. In The fall the opening shots are a handheld shot following a woman in her apartment alone. The fact that the shot is handheld makes it almost feel like we are spying on her and hiding from her sight.

Luther starts off the series in media res and right in the centre of the action. This sets the tone for the show as being fast paced and quick. This also tells us that the detective, luther, will be following this fast paced convention. Differently The fall starts off very slow and at the beginning of our story. This sets the tone of intricacy and details.

After this shot there is a quick cut of shots of a man. This builds tension and the fast editing style also sets the tone as a tense thriller. Again this quick sequence is very dark which also sets the tone of a bleak pre credit sequence. We later find out the hooded figure is actually the main detective Luther. This tells the audience that the character is extremely dedicated to his job as he has clearly been shown to chase criminals through thick and thin. This hugely varies in The fall as our cuts are very slow and are shots tend to linger. This creates a similar creepy effect but takes out the jarring nature of luther. This ups the anticipation and also sets the tone to be slower and more precise than Luther. The slow and precise editing of The Fall also emphasises this and creates fear and also adds a sense of uncomfortableness.

luther is also shown as being a maverick as he is shown to leave one of the criminals he is catching to die. This shows off his unique approach to catching criminals and also highlights his ability to get results. This is a very stereotypical trope of crime dramas by having a rogue agent who doesn't always follows the rules but gets the results in an unorthodox way. This is further emphasised by after he has got his answer on where a girl is he still yet leaves the criminal hanging from a bridge to fall. This also highlights his extremely hardened ways. He is ruthless and is almost laking of emotion in this pre credit scene.

In the fall we are introduced to are main villain very early on. One of the things that makes the audience response uncomfortable to the villain is the fact that we don't actively dislike him. He is an average man with a family and a wife. Despite his crimes the audience are almost meant to sympathise with him and one of the main ways they do this is by having a POV shot early on when he breaks into the house.

Much like the tone of the show the opening graphics to The Fall are very slow and usually very drawn out. This tells the audience that the show is very detailed and precise much like the opening
