Music Videos Analysis

Imagine Dragons is an American rock band from Las Vegas consisting of lead vocalist Dan Reynolds, lead guitarist Wayne Sermon, bassist and keyboardist Ben McKee and drummer Daniiel Platzman. The band first gained exposure in 2012 with the releases of their debut studio album Night Visions and its first single "It's Time". Billboard placed them at the top of their "Year In Rock" rankings for 2013, and named them their "Breakthrough Band of 2013".

One of the bands largest hits was Im on top of the world. The music video is a satirical take on the moon landing. It shows 4 main astronaut actors faking the moon landing. It is satirising the theory of america faking the moon landing. Imagine dragons try to create a fun persona of the band. This is clearly shown through the use of bright colours and light visuals throughout the video. Despite the fact that they are dealing with a serious political issue they still create this fun lively band persona by adding a performance aspect of the music video. Near the end the mostly narrative based video changes to a performance. A crowd of people rush in and then the band starts performing. This shows the fun persona of the band and also represents them as down to earth humble people. The fact that they also represent people from all different backgrounds represents them as having multiple backgrounds in the band.

Another one of imagine dragons' hits include its time. The music video is a dramatic change to the previous one being very fun and colourful, where as this one is very dark and gloomy. The music video is purely thematic and emphasises the visuals in the video. The music video is both narrative and performance. Similar to the last one it starts off narrative based and then shifts towards a performance later on in the music video. The music video uses juxtaposition to contrast the mostly lively and fun song to a dark and bleak music video. The colours are black and dull and emphasises the artists who are walking in this bleak landscape. This music video also shows that imagine dragons can be serious aswell as having their fun and bouncy persona.

All these videos i have discussed differ massively in both colour and themes. Thunder deals with themes of urban living and how alienated you feel while living in a city. This video is again both narrative and performance based. There are a few shots in the film where the band are pictured together and are made to look small in the city. This shows how intimidating and scary the urban jungle can be. This video also shows imagine dragons as a bit abstract and weird, reinforcing the indie band feel.
